Mechanical Watch Write For Us – They tick one quite often and the other somewhat less. But do you know how these two types of watches differ? In this article, we explain it to you. The theme is mechanical and quartz eyes.
The operation of a mechanical watch
Automatic watches are the most classic option since they work practically in the same way as 100 years ago. Whether it is a mechanical or quartz watch, both tell time. The main difference is inside.
In the first instance, all watches need a place to accumulate energy. In the case of mechanical watches, this is usually a mainspring housed in the barrel. The length of the mainspring determines the power reserve of the automatic watch, that is, the time it lasts until it runs out of power and stops. On most models, the power reserve is around 40 hours, but it can be several days or weeks.
Put very simply, gears transfer stored energy to a regulating mechanism. This is the watch’s heart and generates the impulses that keep it moving. In mechanical wristwatches, the regulating agency usually comprises the balance wheel, the seepage wheel, and the lever. The interaction of these components is responsible for the characteristic ticking of the clock. The higher the frequency of the shuttlecock, the faster the ticking will be. Also, the second-hand glides more fluidly as the number of beats increases. The usual frequency is 28,800 vibrations per hour (A/h), equivalent to 4 Hz.
How a quartz watch works
Quartz watches are grounded on a completely different principle. The stored energy usually comes from a button cell. If it is not rechargeable, it can power the clock for several years, but when it wears out, you must replace it with a new one.
The impulse is generated by a quartz crystal that vibrates when an electrical current is applied to it. This is called the reverse piezoelectric effect. The shape of the watch’s quartz crystal often resembles a tuning fork. Most of the time, the frequency is 32,768 Hz, much higher than that of a mechanical watch. This is why quartz watches are considerably more accurate.
A circuit divides the frequency by two until one-second intervals are reached. This is why the second hand moves once every second. If the clock does not have needles, an LCD screen usually indicates the time in digital format.
Advantages and disadvantages of quartz watches
Quartz watches offer numerous advantages: they are cheap, accurate, and exceptionally durable. Many models can be purchased for only about 100 euros, they barely deviate 30 seconds a month, and the battery has a useful life of between 1 and 2 years.
However, when the battery runs out, it must be thrown away and replaced with a new one, which is harmful to the environment and the watch’s waterproofness. And it is that after opening the bottom of the box to change the battery, the water resistance initially indicated is no longer guaranteed. Therefore, it is convenient to check it at this time.
Quartz watches with solar cells are charged using the sun’s energy, so there is no need to change the battery regularly in such models. However, the useful life of these energy accumulators is also limited, and it is necessary to change them at some point.
On the other hand, most quartz watches are not suitable investments. If you also invest a little money in your new wristwatch, the probability that its value will increase over time is extremely low. Instead, you can often find used quartz watches at an excellent price, even if they had cost several hundred dollars a couple of years earlier.
Advantages and disadvantages of mechanical watches
On the contrary, mechanical watches never run out of power. That is, as long as they are wound up regularly. Since these watches do without any type of battery or cell, they are considerably better for the environment. It is also not necessary to open them until after several years, although it is advisable to take them to check every 5-10 years because the small parts wear out over time. In addition, lubricating oils and greases can resinify over the years. This is especially true if the watch has not been wound for an extended period. During the overhaul, the watchmaker examines the entire look, cleans the mechanism, and re-oils it.
However, you will have to make some compromises regarding the accuracy of these watches. Even certified chronometer watches (i.e., very accurate) can gain or lose 4 to 6 seconds per day, which equates to 28 to 42 seconds per week. Associated with quartz watches, they are at a clear disadvantage.
On the other hand, mechanical watches have a certain artisanal charm with a nostalgic touch that appeals to many watch enthusiasts. This has contributed to the rise of mechanical watches and raised prices.
Select watches from Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, or Vacheron Constantin, still primarily hand-made. This increases the admiration around such pieces and, of course, their value. Cheaper models from other manufacturers use industrial manufacturing methods. In any case, the principle of operation of mechanical watches has hardly changed in the last century.
The difference between automatic and manual winding watches
Generally, mechanical watches can be divided into two groups: those with manual winding and those with automatic. The latter has a winding system that recharges the eye when worn. They usually have an oscillating mass, a rotor, oscillating from one side to the other and tensions the mainspring. So you don’t have to remember to recharge your watch by hand every two or three days, as is the case with manual winding. In principle, an automatic alert will continue to work permanently if worn daily.
